Faith

by Diane Watson

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1, NIV

What is faith? Firstly faith must have an object. We put our faith in God, not in faith itself. It is trusting our lives to what we believe about God, our relationship with Him and our belief in God’s promises. You could say the acrostic for FAITH is Forsaking All others I Trust Him.

It’s not easy walking in faith, holding on to God’s promises when nothing seems to be happening, but knowing that God has asked you to do something, and being obedient to that. Sometimes in walking in faith we feel we’re right out on that limb, balancing precariously, waiting for God to act like He said He would. Sometimes it seems like we’re on that limb for a long time, and if we had our way it would happen sooner! Sound familiar? God in His mercy allows us to wait, and tests our faith, so our character is tested and strengthened.

It’s not easy being in this waiting place, when it seems like foolishness at times. But faith pleases God. In Hebrews 11:6 it says that ‘without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him’.

Faith is also a gift of the Holy Spirit. As we do what God has called us to, our faith will grow and grow. If we can be trusted with a little faith and we’re found worthy, then much more will be given. Have you ever thought to ask God for more faith? It’s surprising how He wants to answer your prayer!

We also know from Scripture if we have a lack of faith that we won’t see God act. In Matthew 13:58 Jesus did not do many miracles in his own hometown because of their lack of faith. How much faith do you have? If you want more perhaps you would like to pray the prayer below, taken from Hebrews 11:5-11.

Prayer: Father God, I want to please You. I ask that You increase my gift of faith to believe for the impossible, because You are faithful. May I have a holy fear and earnestly seek You. Help me to be obedient in all things, and when You ask me to step out in faith, I will do it without hesitation. Father, thank You for loving me and being a faithful God. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
