Where is God When I Am in Trouble?

One of the more challenging aspects of surfing is knowing just where to be in the water. You can usually tell the more seasoned surfers from the less experienced ones because they seem to always be in the right place at the right time. People new to surfing usually end up spending lots of time in the wrong place and get knocked about by the waves, to comical effect for the onlookers! I have learnt a lot from sticking close to more experienced surfers in the water.

It is not easy finding the right place when you are in the midst of the waves. But if you find a good vantage point from the coast, overlooking the surf, it is quite easy to identity the best positions. Having that distance and that overview makes a massive difference. Actually, even just watching the waves from a distance can help with making improvements in your surfing.

If we find ourselves in some troubled waters, it is precious to have people close by, people who can identify with us and empathise. For example, if you struggle in your church, it can help to have others in your church to share with. Or, if it’s family issues, to have family members to talk to.

But I would say it’s at least equally as important to have someone a bit further removed from the situation who can give a different perspective. By definition, someone who is outside of your situation will be able to see things you simply cannot see.

The great thing about God is that He can be in all places at once. Do we need someone close by? He has promised to never leave us or forsake us. He truly understands what we’re going through.

He says, “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you” (Isaiah 43:2). But does that mean His vision is as limited as ours? Thankfully, no! “The Lord looks from heaven, he sees all the sons of men” (Psalm 33:13). God both retains His heavenly vantage point, and is closer by than our very breath, when we call on Him for help.
