Walking As Children of Light

by Denise Cross

For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light … finding out what is acceptable to the Lord.
Ephesians 5:8, NIV

I remember very clearly when the light of the Lord came flooding into my life. On that amazing Friday Jesus spoke into my heart and asked me to choose, light or darkness, truth or lies, life or death. I didn’t understand these choices with my head, but my heart was touched so deeply that I realised I desperately wanted what He offered. I desperately wanted life and light, but this also meant truth was essential too. That was a big challenge for me, as I knew I had lived a life of unreality and deception, and letting the light shine in those areas would be painful. But I was moved so deeply that I knew this was the only way forward, and said Yes to Jesus’ offer. The rest, as they say, is history.

When I look back I’m amazed and humbled by the goodness of God that I felt in the words of Jesus to me on that afternoon. From then on I’ve been on the journey of learning to walk as a child of light, which hasn’t always been easy. So when I read these verses recently I was challenged afresh to find out what it means to walk in a way that is ‘acceptable to the Lord’ Here are some verses that came into focus as I was searching out what the scripture might say is ‘acceptable to the Lord’

1 Timothy 2:3 tells us that praying and interceding for leaders and kings so we can live at peace in godliness and reverence is ‘acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour’

Romans 14:18 says 'he who serves God in these things (the verses before tell us that righteousness, peace and joy are what is indicated) is acceptable to God and approved by men.'

After a while I found myself wondering if I needed to try harder, pray more or give more service in order to be acceptable, because that seemed to be what these scriptures were indicating. But then I found Acts 10:35 which has the definitive answer to the question posed in our verse for today: ‘but in every nation anyone who fears Him and does what is right is acceptable to Him’. So now it is clear; to walk as a child of light you must fear God and do what is right. It sounds simple, but I think this will be another search of the scriptures to find out more about how to truly ‘fear the Lord’ and ‘do what is right’. It’s an exciting challenge walking as children of Light.
