The Wrong Direction

by Catherine Baker

This is what the Lord says:
“Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls.
Jeremiah 6:16, NIV

Bill and I were at a nature area “De Weiden” near Giethorn in the Netherlands last week. There was a narrow pathway, which was one way only, going around the nature reserve.
There were arrows showing the direction in which way we should walk. So that it not only enabled the Corona social distancing, but also protected the plants from being stood on.
At first, we did not see the arrows because our focus was on the nature around us. Some had no concerns about it, but others informed us we were walking in the wrong direction!
At this time, I sensed in my spirit that the Lord had a direction for my life and a good way that I should walk in. If I am alert to what is around me and am not distracted, I will be aware of the good way where I will find rest for my soul. In a time when there is so much unrest in the world around us.

I was sensing unrest while walking on the path the wrong way round but at first I did not know why. If we come off the path or go in the opposite direction. we will not find the rest that our souls need. But, if we realize our mistake it is written in Romans 8:28: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

As God’s purpose is always for good, He can use mistakes to show us a better way, not to condemn us.

The Holy Spirit is gracious and will gently point out when we are going in the opposite direction. He used people for us that day to point out we were walking in the opposite way of the arrows on the path.

It reminded me that the Holy Spirit guides sometimes directly or by using others to point the right way. These people did it in a kind and gentle way like the Holy Spirit.
Deuteronomy 5:32 says, “So you shall observe to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left.”

Prayer: Father God, we ask You to keep us on the path which You want us to walk on. Protect us from distraction so we do not turn from the good way. Holy Spirit help us connect to Your love and bring awareness to what You have put in us that equips us to walk the way that is good and pleasing in Your sight, that brings rest for our souls. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
