The Watchman Part 1

by Joan Rono

But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes someone’s life, that person’s life will be taken because of their sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for their blood.
Ezekiel 33:6, NIV

As you walk through some of the Kenya’s estates and homes you will see a little structure at the gate. This is a watchman’s hut. The watchman is stationed there to see that the house is secure and no harm befalls the inhabitants. They have a whistle to call for help if need be.

The work of a watchman is not easy. In the Old Testament we read of how the job of a watchman was to guard the city and warn the people when there were any dangers coming. But he was also a symbolic picture of a prophet or a seer! In Isaiah 62:6 we read ‘I have posted watchmen on your walls, Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the LORD, give yourselves no rest.` A watchman is referred to here as an intercessor.

God called Ezekiel as a watchman for the house of Israel, to warn them of the consequences of turning away from the Lord. Every time the Lord gave a message to him, he had to give it to the people, to warn them to turn back to God.

I believe that God has called us, as believers, to be watchmen for the world, our nations, our communities and our families. We are His witnesses. In these last days many want to turn away from the truth. People have blocked their ears so that they can’t hear, ‘for the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.)They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths (2 Timothy 4:3-4).

We are called to be witnesses to the truth. It’s only the truth that will set people free, but if we who are witnesses to the truth are silent, how will they know the truth!
Jesus told the disciples they would be His witnesses. ‘On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles’ (Matthew 10:18).

The problem the church faces today is that the Gospel is confined within the church walls. Fear has stopped the church from speaking the Word. Where are the witnesses? Are we willing to stand out and let our neighbour, work colleague, friend and those around us know about the love God has for them? These are the last days and we are the watchmen commissioned by God to blow a whistle and tell the people about the only redemption, Jesus Christ!

Prayer: Father, thank You for saving me. Please help me to be a witness to those around me about Your love and saving grace Thank You for Your call. Please help me to obey You. Amen.
