The Power of Your Testimony

by Patricia MacEachern

They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony;
Revelation 12:11a, NIV

Society would tell us that to be successful and to have a great life everything must be perfect. We need to have been brought up by wonderful, loving parents, live in a beautiful home, have a great job, drive a new car, have lots of disposable income and have lots of friends.

However, we know that this is not realistic, and circumstances arise that cause us difficulties, pain and suffering. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33b). Personally speaking, these ‘troubles’ have drawn me close to God and through them He has taught me more about Himself and His love and care for me. This has given me a testimony to share with others of how God has walked, and continues to walk, with me through the struggles and difficulties.

As a parent of three, I have watched our children go through difficulties and have desperately wanted to help them and ‘fix it’ for them, so that they didn’t have to struggle. As I was pleading with God one day as to what I could do to help one of them and take away their pain, He reminded me that this was my child’s story. What was happening in my child’s life was part of their testimony. Without the struggle my child would not be able to receive God’s touch in their life for themselves.

Because of my struggles and the healing that God has brought to me, I can understand others who struggle in the same way, get alongside them and share God’s love and what He has done for me. God reminded me that He wants this to be my child’s story too.
As this particular child continues to struggle on a daily basis, I have to keep reminding myself that this is their story, but because of my testimony and God’s faithfulness in walking with me each day, I trust God that He will give my child the testimony that He promised me.

Prayer: Father God, forgive me, Lord, for trying to ‘fix’ the struggles in my loved ones’ lives. I thank You for the testimony that You have given me, and continue to give me, as I walk daily with You. Thank You that, because You love those we love, we can trust that You are giving them their own testimony to share with others. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
