Seeds of the Kingdom

The Mysterious Kingdom

by Bernard Kariuki

He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them”.
Matthew 13:11, NIV

In His teaching on the Lord’s prayer, Jesus mentioned about letting the Kingdom of God come on earth. Later on, He was teaching, in parables, what the Kingdom of God is like. He must have been drawing a picture, so that the disciples could have an understanding of what it meant by ‘let thy Kingdom come’.

The disciples asked Jesus why He was using parables, and Jesus told them that understanding the mystery of the kingdom is not for all, but for those who listen to His teachings. We’re privileged to be chosen to belong to the mysterious kingdom, and be sons and daughters of the King, princes and princesses.

By listening to His teachings, we’ve more understanding and an abundance of knowledge that will help us in understanding the mysteries of the kingdom. Those who don’t listen, the little understanding they have will be taken from them. So, don’t be surprised when others don’t comprehend the decisions you make in the name of listening to the Lord, when they fail to understand “I’m seeking, or trusting, the Lord”, “I have faith”, or “I’m waiting on the Lord”. For these are the mysteries of the Kingdom, only understood by those who know Christ, the King, and listen to His teachings, and walk in close relationship with Him.

If you find yourself in a situation where you’re not understanding the language of the Kingdom, retrace your steps. Allow Jesus to teach you, because He’s humble and gentle in heart (Matthew 11:29).

By leaning on our own understanding, we won’t understand the mystery. It’s not through our own knowledge that we’ll understand the mystery of the Kingdom, but it’s through His knowledge. These things will be hidden from those who think themselves wise and clever (Matthew 11:25). That’s why some of greatest scientist discover things, but they’ve never discovered the Creator behind them, for they’re trying to solve the equation on their own understanding, and they can’t comprehend.

Jesus was talking to the crowd and saying that He’s bread, and, in order to live and never die, they needed to eat His flesh, which was the bread of life (John 6:55). That’s mind-boggling. ‘For My flesh is real food, and My blood is real drink’. On hearing this, many of Jesus’ disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him, saying, “This is a difficult teaching. Who can accept it?” (John 6:59). We need Jesus for understanding, and that’s why, when Jesus asked the twelve if they wanted to leave as well, Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68).

The Kingdom is mysterious. They couldn’t understand, when calling for God to answer by fire, why Elijah poured water on the altar three times, or why Jesus had jars filled with water in order to get wine. Mary understood Jesus, but the servants didn’t. That’s why Mary told them to do exactly what was required of them. The more you stick to Jesus, meditating on His Word day and night, the more will be revealed, and the more you do exactly as He tells you to, the more you’ll come to trust Him. This will be mysterious to many.

Prayer: Thank You, God, for revealing to us these things by Your Spirit. For Your Spirit searches out everything and shows us Your deep secrets. I pray for the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep Your love is. May I experience the love of Christ, though it’s too great to understand fully. Then I’ll be made complete, with all the fullness of life and power that comes from You, God. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
