The Lost Earring

by Annalene Holtzhausen

Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Won’t she light a lamp and sweep the entire house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she will call in her friends and neighbours and say, “Rejoice with me because I have found my lost coin.”
Luke 15:8-9, NLT

Life has many challenges, and often people go through hardships and times of suffering and pain. We persevere and trust, but sometimes the journey we’re on can lead us to believing the lie that the Lord isn’t hearing us anymore. Our prayers feel useless and we become weary along the way. We know God has the perfect timing, but it can be quite difficult to trust Him when the trials seem to be never-ending. Some situations leave us without answers and without hope.

A friend of mine recently shared something beautiful the Lord did in her life and it’s just a wonderful testimony of how much the detail in our lives really matter to Him. About five years ago, she lost one of her earrings. She searched and searched for it, but never found it. Without knowing why, she just kept the other one, even though she couldn’t wear it anymore.

She’d been battling with a different issue over the last couple of weeks and was crying out to the Lord for understanding in what she saw as a huge mess and disappointment. So many prayers in this situation seemed unanswered and the outcome beyond understanding for those involved. On this same day that she was crying out, her lost earring was found in their garage … after five years! They were cleaning out their garage and when they were sweeping the floor, the earring was found. She has no idea how it ended up in the garage.

In this moment, she had the assurance from the Lord that all is well, and all will be well. He’ll take care of every detail in this specific situation. But she also realised how deeply He cares about every detail in her life, and hears every prayer. He knew where the earring was for all these years and chose this specific day for it to be found. The Lord knew how much she needed His touch and reassurance in the situation she was facing.

In Luke 15 Jesus uses the parable of the lost sheep to explain to the Pharisees the joy in heaven over one lost sinner who repents and returns to God (Luke 15:7). The parable of the lost coin in today’s scripture is another illustration of how much each person matters to God. He’s our Maker and He’s completely aware of every detail in our lives. He hears every one of our prayers and they matter to Him. ‘And when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb (Christ), each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of fragrant incense, which are the prayers of the saints (God’s people)’ (Revelation 5:8, AMP).

Even though the Lord’s timing and ways often seem to be different to what we have in mind, it’s always the perfect timing and outcome. He sees the whole picture and is never rushed, because He’s never caught unawares. He knows how all things come together according to His perfect plan. ‘God’s way is perfect. All the Lord’s promises prove true. He is a shield for all who look to Him for protection’ (Psalm 18:30). ‘You are the wrap-around God giving grace to me’ (Psalm 18:30b, TPT).

Prayer: Dear Father, thank You that I matter to You. You see me for who I am and know all my hurts, fears and desires. Lord, this journey I’m on seems never-ending, and I feel weary. Please strengthen me to carry on and persevere in prayer. You hear my every prayer and I trust in Your plans and timing for my life. I love You, Lord. Amen.
