The Danger of Victimhood

But You do see trouble and grief. You consider it to take it into Your hand. You help the victim and the fatherless.
Psalm 10:14, NHEB

We live in a world where horrible things are happening in people’s lives every day. Atrocities are constantly being revealed in news broadcasts. God surely sees every painful event and He longs to comfort the victims, if they are willing to come to Him for His help.

However, there is a significant difference between our being the victim of a particular issue of injustice and our embracing an identity of being a victim. The former is an involuntary reality, while the latter is a choice, a stance which seems to be increasingly encouraged in society today.

Followers of Jesus have stepped into a radical new identity, completely different from that of their former life, when they were slaves to the circumstances of life. They are now children of God and overcomers in Christ. This does not mean that the injustice is instantly resolved but it does mean that whatever is driving that injustice does not have the licence to define who we are, whatever the world may say.

The spiritual ruler of this world seeks to negate our God-given identity by drawing us into accepting any label over our lives that holds us, at least in part, to something that gives the enemy opportunity to drive our attitudes and choices, including the label of victim. But we have the choice to discard that false identity.
