Switch the Light On

For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!
Ephesians 5:8, NLT

A little while back there was an electricity outage. For two days there was only cold water and the daylight that came through the windows. We had decided to do a jigsaw puzzle, which is a challenge normally, but even more so that day, as we hoped to get it finished before sunset.

It started off well enough. It was a sunny day. But, as the day went on, it got darker and we had to move the jigsaw closer and closer to the window to be able to see the puzzle pieces.

I was reminded that, before we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour, we are walking in the darkness, but the moment we accept Him, He brings us into the light.

In today`s verse it mentions that we were once in darkness, living life our own way in sin, but now – through Jesus Christ - we are light, and we are to live and walk in that light.

As the day went on, it became more and more difficult to see the puzzle pieces clearly and it eventually became too dark in the room. I thought of using a torch, but then I just had to accept that we weren`t going to finish the jigsaw that day. By then the sun had fully set, and it was not possible to see anything.

However, when I opened the door to go out of the room, this bright light shone in my face! The electricity was back on. At some stage during the day, the electricity had gone back on, but we were so focussed on the puzzle that we didn’t even think of switching the light on. The power was there, but we didn`t use it.

This got me thinking. God has given us free will. He is always with us. The access to the Light (God) is there, but we can choose if we want to allow God to shine His light into `the room` of our lives. Are there areas in our lives where we haven’t switched that light on? What areas still need surrendering? What sins do we need to repent of?

I am thankful that God is still with us in those areas, and He doesn't condemn us. But when we allow Him into those areas, and make Him Lord, the darkness has to flee, and restoration takes place. In Him there is no darkness, for He is light (1 John 1:5).
