Seeds of the Kingdom

Son of God, Son of Man!

by Lynda Scott

This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of David and of Abraham.
Matthew 1:1, NLT

Recently I’ve been looking into our family history. I’ve discovered that my husband’s family has been farming continuously on this land since 1843. In some countries that’s probably only a short period of time, but in Australia it’s a very long time. My purpose in undertaking this research is to give my children a sense of where they’ve come from and help them understand the history of our farm, and those who’ve shaped it into what it is today. I want to help them understand something of their identity.

After tracing my own genealogical records I approached the Scriptures with a fresher understanding. Where we come from matters to God. Where Jesus came from mattered too. Jesus was the Son of God, as John 1 describes, with God in the beginning. Jesus knew who He was and had a complete revelation of His own identity.

The beginning of the New Testament gives us an even greater insight into who Jesus was. Matthew 1 gives a highly detailed account of Jesus’ genealogy. This is the very first book of the New Testament. Why did it start with the genealogy of Jesus? Because it was the irrefutable proof that Jesus was the Son of Man.

Why did it matter that Jesus was the Son of God and the Son of Man? It mattered because, as the Son of God, He had greater authority and power over Satan. But if He wasn’t the Son of Man He couldn’t redeem us and overcome Satan, because it was man (Adam) that gave Satan his authority at the fall. The genealogy records of the Bible prove that Jesus was a direct descendant of Adam, and it was only Jesus that could undo the mistake that Adam made. That’s why the Bible goes to extreme lengths to show us that Jesus was both Son of God and Son of Man.

So at the cross Jesus truly took the sin and the punishment we deserved upon Himself. He didn’t deserve it, being the sinless Lamb of God. He was the sacrifice for our sin. Satan is defeated! Death is defeated! We’re redeemed!

Maybe you’ve never thought about Jesus being the Son of God and the Son of Man. Let this truth penetrate your spirit today and give thanks to Him for who He is, and all He’s done.

Maybe you find it hard to be proud of where you’ve come from. Jesus is our Redeemer. Some of the actions of people in Jesus’ own family history were not things to be proud of. Many of them made mistakes and did things they shouldn’t have. However the grace of God comes to cleanse even the worst of sin. Let His sweet cleansing grace begin a deep healing work in your life and your family today.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, I want to proclaim today that you are the SON OF GOD and the SON OF MAN! I’m so thankful for who You are and all that You’ve done. Praise You, Jesus, that Satan is defeated and that we’re redeemed. May Your cleansing, healing grace wash through my life and give me an identity and future that I can be proud of. Amen.
