Rest in Him
by Vicky Munro
What does rest in Him mean? Does it mean sleep, or do nothing? How about this? Trust in Him, rely on Him. Wait! That can be a tough one, to wait, regenerate, pray, and listen.
When we don’t rest in Him, we can miss hearing His voice, because we are so caught up in the busyness of life. Our thoughts are overwhelming, and we are exhausted.
I have learnt the importance of rest, not just spiritually, but also emotionally and physically. After recently having surgery, I felt great, and I jumped into things too quickly and ended up setting myself back. I’m not going to tell a lie. I was very upset about it and felt terrible. However, I decided to look at the time I had to take to rest as a positive time. I found that through this time I have been able to recover physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Sometimes life can be really demanding. We can end up burning out, which is no good to God or anyone else. But what I learnt during this time is I can be still and not rush into things. I don’t have to do everything. I do like to be busy serving God, and I’m not saying it’s wrong to do that. But I had to learn that we are part of a body, and we all have different functions.
‘Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function,’ (Romans 12:4).
So, I have learned to ask God, “What is Your will for my life? Where am I to serve?”
I know that sometimes I have such a passion to serve that I will run off without checking with the Lord if that’s where He wants me.
By taking time to rest, we give God a chance to speak to us. When we are still, we can listen to His voice. We can also talk to Him about the things that overwhelm us. We can lay down the things that cause us anxiety and worry. We can give our bodies, minds, and spirits a chance to regenerate and rest. After all, God knows the whole picture. Everything is in His control. It’s all in the hands of our loving heavenly Father.
Can I encourage you to rest in Him today? Lay down everything, and trust that He has got hold of it all, and that He loves you and has a plan for you.
