Reminding God
by David Cross
God does not just want relationship with us, He wants Covenant. Unfortunately we are Covenant breakers. We naturally walk in iniquity, which simply means that we are out of line with God and with His commands for our well-being. Actually the iniquity which we carry comes not only from our own sin but also from the inherited iniquity of our forebears. Sin issues run in the family.
Thankfully one person has walked the earth in perfect obedience to the terms of God’s Covenant. His name is Jesus. If we’ve chosen to be part of God’s family through Jesus, then He acts as our representative in the New Covenant which has been established through the Cross. This statement of Covenant, a life and death commitment by God towards His people, was first clearly spoken to Abraham, but God promised to continue the same Covenant relationship to Abraham’s descendants.
Galatians 3:29 tells us that followers of Jesus are all regarded as Abraham’s descendants, partakers in this extraordinary Covenant with God. How do we enter into the full benefit of this deep place of fellowship and restoration? God prompts us to openly acknowledge and to turn away from iniquity. This iniquity is caused by our own sin and the past sin in our family. Jesus carried all this iniquity for us at the Cross but God says that our confession acts as a ‘reminder’ of His promises to restore us.
God will never forget His commitment to us but every dad loves to hear his children being honest in their response to his challenges. Our Heavenly Father loves to hear us speak the truth to Him about our imperfect lives. Then He can point us to the saving work of His perfect Son Jesus, who died on the Cross.
Today’s a good day to give God the opportunity to ‘remember’ His Covenant with you.
Prayer: Thank you Lord for your covenant faithfulness, your amazing love and for all the promises that were fulfilled in Jesus. Thank you Lord that because of your covenant love and the faithfulness of Jesus my sins were dealt with at the cross. In Jesus' name. Amen
