Reflect Him

by Yulia Kariuki

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma.
Ephesians 5:1-2, NIV

As I was enjoying my walk, on one of those beautiful days when the sun shines and everything around is so still, my attention was drawn to the reflection of the trees in the water. The absence of any wind, and the stillness of the day, made it possible for me to see the exact shape of the trees, perfectly reflected, in the water. As I looked at this, I thought about how it would have been difficult to see the exact reflection if the water hadn’t been still.

As I continued with my walk, I was challenged by the fact that we’re to have the reflection of Jesus in our lives. Do we reflect Jesus as well as that still water reflected the trees? When people look at us, do they see Jesus? Do they see His love in our eyes? Do they feel His care in what we say, or His kindness in what we do? As the wind disturbs the water and stops it reflecting the trees in a perfect way, so our lives can be full of storms, emotions and struggles, so that we fail to reflect our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bible says, that we’re to be the imitators of God. To imitate means to follow as a model, or to copy. Whatever the Lord does, we’re to imitate. We’re to copy who He is, and become like Him. We’re not meant to just be better versions of ourselves, a little bit kinder or nicer. Our goal is to reflect Jesus, in our character, actions and words. As still water reflects trees, let’s allow the Lord to fill us with His peace and love, so we can reflect Him to this dark world. Let’s ask Him to help us to become the imitators of Jesus, touching the hurting and needy people around us, and bringing hope wherever we go.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I pray You’d help me to be more like You. Change me, so I can reflect You fully. Amen.
