Seeds of the Kingdom

Our Shield and Protector

by Gemma Gardner

“Just as the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people, both now and forever”
Psalm 125:2, NLT

I have some special binoculars that I can wear on my head. I have poor eyesight, but these enable me to see the words on the screen at church, so I can join in the worship songs. I use them for other activities, too, such as watching television. My husband bought them for me, and they came in a soft pouch. I carried them in my handbag when I went to church, and they were safe. But last month, we went away on holiday, and I packed the binoculars in my rucksack, inside their little bag. I thought they would be safe, but on arrival at our destination, I was dismayed to find that the nose piece was broken off. They had got crushed against all the rest of the luggage that was loaded into our car.

I managed to use them while we were away, but had to balance them somehow on my nose, holding them with one hand. When we got home, my husband glued the nose piece back on, and it has stayed in place since. He also bought me a special case with protective foam inside, and he cut the foam to fit round the binoculars, so now they are totally surrounded by protective foam, and the case itself is shock-proof.

The Lord often speaks to me through simple everyday occurrences, and the Scripture above came into my mind. It is such a comfort to know that the Lord is surrounding us, His people. Whatever the world, our flesh, or the enemy tries to throw at us, we are safe in the Lord’s hands. Verse 1 of this psalm is a wonderful promise for all God’s people: “Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever” (Psalm 125:1 NLT).

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are always with me, and that You surround me with Your Presence and protection. Thank You for being a shield to protect me from the fiery darts of the evil one. Help me to trust in You at those times when I feel insecure or afraid. Thank You that You will never let me go, and You will present me faultless before Your throne. In Jesus’ Name I pray. Amen.
