Hidden Contamination

by John Berry

If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Matthew 5:29-30, NIV

There are many things which we are told are dangerous to our health, and one of the high risk elements is asbestos. Recent statistics indicate that currently over 3000 people die each year in the UK from asbestosis, and the number is increasing.

As a consequence new guidelines have been issued which all non-domestic property owners have to follow. Initially we understood that a specialist had to come in (at vast cost) and remove all traces of asbestos in our buildings. Now we are told it’s better not to disturb the material if it’s in good condition, but to manage it properly instead. The danger remains, but is considered ‘manageable’.

Many Christians contain dangerous material within them. The effect of sin and enemy action leave a residue of ungodliness in their spirit, soul or body. Their actions and attitudes are contaminated and become both life-threatening to them and to those around them. By contrast with the advice to leave asbestos alone and manage it, Jesus tells us that we should take steps to clean out all contamination.

The problem is that sin festers within us, and stops godly growth. And when our contamination comes into contact with others it damages them too. It is only when we clean up the inside that believers can become mature and effective disciples of Jesus.

If we have fallen into the trap of trying to ‘manage’ ungodly ways within us, instead of seeking Jesus’ help to remove dangerous materials, we may be in danger. We need to ask God to reveal such things to us. Then we need to go to the specialist - the Holy Spirit - to get ourselves really cleaned up.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you still love me, even when there are things about me that need cleaning up. help me to see with your eyes those things that ened attention and then with Your help, do something about them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
