Guidance

by Malcolm Wood

The Lord says ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.'
Psalm 32:8, NLT

We have nicknamed our Sat Nav Grace. A girl’s name because it has a female voice and Grace because no matter how often she is ignored or disobeyed she patiently announces she’s recalculating, and then proceeds to graciously issue further instructions, designed to get us back on course and heading in the right direction.

Isn’t that a lot like many of us in our walk with the Lord? We inadvertently, or perhaps dare I say deliberately, do our own thing and go our own way, ignoring the divine route mapped out for us and then wonder why we find ourselves in difficulty.

When we choose to do it our way we need to realise that the consequences of that choice may be that we’re hindered in achieving God’s purposes in our life. This was brought home to me the other day when on a journey with Grace. At one stage of the journey I felt sure that the instruction given by Grace was not the best option and proceeded to go my own way. When eventually I reached my destination I realised that the consequence of going my way had taken me 30 miles further and put over an hour on my journey time! In future I will listen to Grace and also have a map to hand. We need to listen to the voice of the Lord and also ensure that our course of action doesn’t contravene in any way what His written word says.

The good news is that when we do get it wrong and admit that we have, and turn to the Lord, He’s gracious to forgive, pick us up, and help us on our way again. He wants us to fulfil all that He’s planned for us, to remain on the pathway He’s mapped out for us and achieve the purposes of His Kingdom in our lives. After all He’s invested a great amount in us to make this possible - His life!

Prayer: Dear Lord, I’m sorry for the times I go my own way. Thank You for Your grace and mercy which draws me back to You. Help me to stay on course and achieve in my life all that will bring You honour and praise. Amen.
