God Will Be with You

I love the account of Moses ‘argument’ with God, as he meets Him at the burning bush. In the verses above we read how Moses had started his argument about not being the right person for the job God was calling him to do. He said to God, “Who am I that I should …?” And God’s response is simply, “But I will be with you”.

It seems irrelevant to God’s response whether Moses was thinking that he wasn’t qualified, wasn’t strong enough, or even that, at around eighty years old, he was too old, whether he was struggling with identity issues (given his birth and upbringing), or whether he thought himself a failure, having lived the life he had done in Egypt, only to lose whatever chances he might have had there.

God doesn’t answer Moses’ question. Instead of God helping Moses to understand who he is, or bringing healing into his potentially crushed and confused spirit and soul, and explaining why He’s choosing him, He just says, “But I will be with you”. Note also that the sign that God would be with Moses wasn’t going to be apparent until after the event!

I like to think of it as Moses saying, “I can’t”, perhaps like a small child learning to do something new or trying something daring, like swinging on the branch of a tree, having already failed once. But our Daddy in heaven is reassuring them and saying, “You’ll be alright. I’ll be with you”.

When I look back on my life, particularly at the troubled times when I struggled to cope with the mess and brokenness of those many years in the ‘desert place’, when I didn’t know Him, I can now see that God was with me. The signs are there when I look back.

Even in more recent years of knowing Him, and walking the miraculous journey of healing He’s been leading me on, there have been times when I’ve struggled and said, “I can’t”, or “who am I?” But I’ve always been reassured by the knowledge that He’s with me, and carried on in this wonderful journey (albeit, sometimes, after a pause).

It doesn`t matter who you’ve been, what you`ve done, what`s been done to you, or what you face. What matters is that God is with you and He’ll always be with you.

Perhaps, today, you’re struggling with circumstances that threaten to overwhelm you, and you feel as if you can’t go on. Or perhaps you’ve come to a stop, and you’re looking back at your past and asking, “Who am I?” Speak out all that doubt and frustration to the Lord our God in prayer and let Him reassure you with the words, “But I’ll be with you”.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, my Daddy in heaven, help me to understand that You’re always with me. You’ll never leave me or forsake me, and You’ll always be with me. Help me to walk the path that You have for me, hand in hand with You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
