God Knows Your Future

by Wendy Scott

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High, will rest in in the shadow of the Almighty… He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge.
Psalm 91:1, NIV

God knows the past, the present and the future, because He is eternal and does not live in time as we do. Of course, many of us will ask why God does not tell us what is in the future. The answer is that we can only manage one day at a time, with His help. He carries the burden of the future for us and just wants us to trust Him every day.

I will tell you a true story to illustrate the fact that God knows our future and He prepares us to cope with what is coming in the future, as long as we cling to His hand in the same way that a little child holds tightly to its mother’s hand when crossing the road.

Our family was hiking in the Drakensberg Mountains over the Christmas holidays. However, I had not been well and so they left me to rest in the shade of a large overhanging rock, halfway up the mountain, while they continued up the steep path. While I was sitting there, I felt God say to me that He would protect me, just like the overhanging rock was protecting me. Nothing in my life at that time hinted of a special need for God’s protection, but I thanked him for the peace which filled my heart.

Three weeks later, I received a call telling me that my husband had been in a serious car accident and had a severe head injury. Despite the tremendous shock, I felt God’s peace in my heart, even though I had to cope externally with all the challenges that faced me.

The next morning, I was sitting next to my husband’s unconscious body in ICU, and the words of a recent song came to mind. The words of the song were, ‘Hide me now under your wings, cover me with your mighty hand. When the oceans rise and thunders roar, I will soar with you above the storm’. I remembered God promising to protect me in the mountains and I realised that God knew that this storm was coming. What an assurance I had in my heart that He would be with me through the whole trauma. I sang this song quietly over my husband for many days. He almost died twice in ICU, but he finally regained consciousness after three weeks, and is alive and well today.

From this experience I know is that God was with me and His peace protected me. His promise kept me strong. If God can do it for me, He can do it for you.

Prayer: Thank You, Father God, that we need not worry constantly about the future because You are already there. Help us, Holy Spirit, to lean on You and allow Your strength and peace support us at all times. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
