“I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing.”
John 15:5, NLT

The Lord often speaks to me through the ordinary, everyday things I experience in my life. This time it happened when we were away on holiday. I had a birthday, and my sister-in-law gave me a gift voucher. I decided to use it to buy some wireless headphones that I could use with my phone and other devices to listen to music. I liked the thought of not having to plug the earphones into anything because they worked wirelessly on Bluetooth.

I received the earphones two days later and my husband, Dean, connected them up with my phone and another device and I was enjoying listening to classical music. But when I came to listen on the second device I had, I found they wouldn’t work. Then I discovered that it was because they were still connected to my phone. Once they were disconnected, they worked on the other device.

I learned a lesson: just as the earphones would only work on one device and needed to be disconnected from the other, something Jesus said came into my mind. “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24).

It’s so easy to get distracted from the Lord and caught up with worldly activities. There’s nothing wrong with listening to music through earphones, but it would be wrong if I spent all my time doing it and not spending time quietly with the Lord, praying, reading His Word, and listening to what He wants to say to me.

Just as the planets revolve around the sun, the Lord wants us to revolve around Him. He wants to be in the centre of our lives. I am trying to get into the way of talking with Him as I go through my daily activities, inviting Him to be involved in all I do, think and say, but I still have a long way to go and there will always be something new to learn this side of eternity.
