Be Still and Know That I am God

Do we seem to have more time on our hands these days? If so, what are we doing with it? Are we filling it with activity to keep ourselves occupied, or are we using the time to be still before the Lord? To know Him as God, resting in His presence and immersed in His grace, with the full assurance of His love, is the place He would have us be.
To know anyone or anything there must be a basis of truth, otherwise there’s nothing to build on. Truth is fundamental and cannot be changed. Jesus said, “I am the truth.” It’s the foundation of faith and powerful in its outworking. ‘The truth will set you free
To be assured of the truth gives us certain principles on which we can stand with confidence. They will never let us down because they are true. We can be safe in the knowledge of truth. It provides us with us the assurance and certainty we can hold on to. Truth is what we know. Truth is being sure.
If we take what we know about God, and build it all together, piece by piece like a tower, this becomes our strength and our refuge (Proverbs 18:10). If we’re not sure about God, or can’t find Him because He’s so far away, we need to look for the truth of who He is. This is to be found in scripture. It is safe, trustworthy and reliable.
We should make a decision to stand upon this truth. It’s strong enough. It can carry our weight. But we must trust the truth in all it says, especially about God. Then we can develop an understanding of who He is and what His purposes are. Based on the truth, as described in scripture, our knowledge of Him becomes trustworthy and dependable. The more we examine His character and His motives, the more secure we become in our relationship with Him. We begin to see Him from a fresh perspective. We can then step out into a new freedom with hope for our lives, because the truth about God is being revealed, slowly but surely, like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, soon to be seen it all its glory.
Knowing God then becomes a reality. ‘To be still and know’ blesses us with the grace, peace, joy and love, and all the other aspects of the Holy Spirit. God is the embodiment of all these features, and so much more.
To know the truth of the eternal love of God calls us to be still, to acknowledge His presence and know the power that sets us free. Truth reveals the full extent of God’s love which is far beyond our human understanding, and as we reach out to grasp it, and begin to live in it, we are ‘filled to the measure of all the fullness of God’ (Ephesians 3:19).
Prayer: Lord, help me to be still. Help me to rest in Your presence. I need to talk with You. I need to listen to You. Help me to hear Your still small voice that speaks into the depths of my spirit. You know all about me and my ways. Let Your ways be my ways, Lord, so that my ways become Your ways. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
