The Lord is my Portion

« Previous DayAccording to an article in the World Economic Forum, over $1 trillion was spent at Christmas by consumers in the USA in 2019! In the UK, one third had no idea what they had spent and the top gifts for men and women was, chocolate!
For all this money spent on Black Friday deals or the last-minute purchase of Christmas socks, nothing can compare to the gifts God gives. His are simply indescribable, bless us to our core and continue to bring life.
Today’s scripture from Lamentations (yes, Lamentations on Christmas Day!) talks about something we have received which is beyond anything we could have asked for or imagined.
In my bible it references back to Numbers 18:20 where God tells Aaron that the Levites will be the only tribe not to receive a portion of the promised land, but that God Himself would be their portion and inheritance. Some might hear that news and be gutted not to get a gift like the other tribes but think about what that means. The Lord Himself was their portion or allotment. He would be their dwelling place, their resting place, their feeding place, their family place. He would be all they need.
Suddenly the stuff of borders, mountains, valleys, rivers and sea mean less compared to having the Lord Himself. The Levites effectively won the jackpot!
Today we celebrate Jesus coming, fulfilling all the biblical prophecies about the Messiah, and making a way for us to become part of the priesthood of God (1 Peter 2:5, 9). In doing this, the Lord has become our portion, our inheritance, our dwelling place. He is all we need.
And as today’s verse ends, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’! What a gift! May you experience the beauty and reality of this as you celebrate today the Lord’s birth.
On behalf of all the Ellel team around the world, we hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a blessed year ahead.
