Perfect peace need not be quiet!

by Roger Pook

And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:7

How often do you long for a little peace and quiet? This is not just the cry of a harassed parent or an overworked employee; all of us sometimes want to take some time away from what’s going on around us. Many years ago there was a film with the title “Stop the world, I want to get off!” I think we can identify with this; if only we could relax for a while in a quiet place.

God’s peace is not quite the same as this. God’s peace means that everything is in order and is working the way that God designed it to work. First of all, we have peace with God. Romans 5:1 says "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." This is way that God designed us to live.

Next, this peace extends into every part of our life. It means that my life is in order; I am doing what God designed me to do. “I am doing the right thing at the right time in the right place!” Can you say this? If you can, then you know a peace which many people have never experienced.

This perfect peace might not be quiet. In fact, it might be very noisy, very busy and very tiring. But if what we are doing is part of God’s perfect will for our life, there will be a knowledge of peace that carries us through what is happening. We know that the rest we need will come when we need it: "So then there remains a rest to the people of God "(Hebrews 4:9).

So the next time the children are screaming, your work is demanding, and your relationships are difficult, ask yourself “Am I doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right place?” If the answer is ‘Yes’, you already have peace. If the answer is No, read Philippians 4:1-10, seek God’s will for your life and find God’s peace.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, I want above all to do Your will, so that I can live in Your peace. Please show me where I am going wrong, so that my life can be brought back into Your order. Amen.
