Hearing God’s Voice Through Prophecy

“But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.”
1 Corinthians 14:3, NLT

Over my adult life I’ve been deeply impacted by words of prophecy. I recall one time at the beginning of 1995, 9 months after falling from a cliff, when I was suffering greatly and very depressed, I received a word of prophecy from my friend’s pastor. That word was directly from God to me, encouraging, strengthening and comforting me, because I realised God knew exactly how I was feeling, and it gave me the hope to carry on through some very difficult months.

So prophecy can be very powerful and is clearly a part of the New Testament Church (Romans 12:6 and Ephesians 4:11). However, many people have been hurt by believing false prophecy. A few things that have helped me over the years are these basic questions. Is the prophetic word strengthening, encouraging and comforting as today’s scripture outlines? Has the prophecy been given in a church with proper spiritual oversight, and has it been recorded so the prophecy can be written down and tested? (1 Corinthians 14:40). Does the prophecy resonate with your spirit? (John 10:4-5).

I’ve found that the more mature I’ve become in the Lord the less number of prophecies the Lord has given me from others. But I deeply treasure the tested prophecies that have been given to me. They became a part of me as I prayed for their fulfillment. When the Lord does give you a promise in the form of a prophecy that promise is very powerful, and God will bring His promises to pass, in His perfect timing. At the end of the prophecy I received in 1995, the pastor, without knowing anything of my situation, said to me ‘you are going to look those people in the eye and forgive them.’ I knew God was referring to those responsible for my accident. It was only last year, 16 years later, that God fulfilled that prophecy!

Maybe today you’re waiting on the Lord to fulfill a prophetic promise. Keep holding on. Or maybe you were hurt by someone who gave you a false word. Then you need to forgive and be released from the power of that word. Don’t give up on God or on the gift of prophecy which He gives. Ask Jesus afresh for His word for you today and, when it comes, let it penetrate the depths of your heart. Just as the Lord knows the depths of my heart, so He does with you too.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank You that You long to speak to me and that You can use the gift of prophecy. I bring any hurts I’ve had from my past, that may hinder me from hearing You, to the foot of the cross. Let me hear Your word for me today, however You want to bring it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
