For His Glory

by Tanya Person

When my glory is displayed through them, all Egypt will see my glory and know that I am the Lord!
Exodus 14:18, NLT

How often have we felt trapped in a situation where we were not in control and we may have felt we were in danger? The situation could have been caused by wrong choices we made, but what about the times when we were doing what we felt God wanted us to do and we still ended up in this kind of a situation?

Recently as I was reading the story again of the Israelites rescue from Egypt, it really struck me that God had led them deliberately to the place where the Egyptians would think they were trapped. Of course, it wasn’t only the Egyptians who believed that. The Israelites also were full of fear and asked Moses why he brought them there. But God had told Moses that he was going to do this to show His glory. I love what it says in verses 13-14: ‘But Moses told the people, “Don’t be afraid. Just stand still and watch the LORD rescue you today. The Egyptians you see today will never be seen again. The LORD himself will fight for you. Just stay calm.”’

How often we need to hear those words: “Just stay calm.” There is no need to worry. The Lord will fight for us, just as He did for the Israelites. And the reason? It is for His glory! It is so the world will see that He is a mighty God, able to save.

If you continue reading the story in Exodus 14, you will read how God led them through the sea on dry land and then drowned all the Egyptians in the same place as they tried to follow. That part of their story finishes in verse 31 with these words: ‘When the people of Israel saw the mighty power that the Lord had unleashed against the Egyptians, they were filled with awe before him. They put their faith in the Lord and in his servant Moses’.

This, then should be our response. Rather than give in to fear, let’s stand still, watch the Lord work, and then be in awe of what He does. Let’s put our faith in Him. He is working for His glory.

Prayer: Lord, sometimes it is hard to have faith, but I pray You will increase my faith, even when situations seem overwhelming. Give me the strength to stand still, to stay calm, and watch You work. Forgive me for the times when I have tried to fix things on my own. I want my life to be for Your glory. Amen.
