Seeds of the Kingdom

Do not be anxious

by Angela Weir

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about our body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes?
Matthew 6:25, NIV

There have been a number of ‘seeds’ recently about how fragile our lives are and how important it is to centre ourselves on God. It’s a cliché to say that life is full of uncertainties, but like most clichés, it’s true.

Jesus taught His disciples not to worry about the future because God has it all in hand. He says to them, and to us, that we should seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness and as we walk before Him in holiness and righteousness, God will provide for us.

This was shown to a friend of mine one evening when she had almost run out of milk. There was just a little in the bottom of a jug and all the shops were shut, so she couldn’t get any more. She was holding a ‘Prayer for Israel’ meeting at her home that evening and when it was time for coffee, she found that there was more than enough milk to go round and that the jug was still full when she had poured out what they needed. For three days afterwards that jug remained full, supplying all the family’s needs!

As human beings we focus so much on our tomorrows, when, as the sudden and sad loss of our friend and colleague at Ellel Grange showed, only too graphically, we may not have a tomorrow. As Jesus said: ‘Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.’ Let’s learn to concentrate on today, living life to its fullest, and keeping short accounts with our Father.

Prayer: Dear loving Father, thank You that You are the Alpha and Omega and that You know the end from the beginning. Please help me to put my anxieties about tomorrow into Your safe keeping and focus on the blessings you give me each day. Amen.
