Heartcry for freedom

by David Cross

If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.
John 8:31-32, NASB

Liberty has been a repeated heartcry worldwide, from both ordinary, and influential, men and women down through history. Countless wars between nations have been fought over the struggle for freedom. Freedom from oppressive government, freedom from slavery, freedom from prejudice, freedom from injustice, all, no doubt, worthy causes to a great degree.

However, Jesus stepped into this world two thousand years ago and brought news of a radical divine truth: mankind’s greatest need for freedom is not in his external condition, but deep within his heart. He explained that if we come to Him for this freedom from inner spiritual bondage, we will know a peace impossible for the world to experience through pursuit of any philosophy, religious practice or political ideology, however well-meaning they might be.

The world has tried to meet the age-old cry for freedom through repeated attempts at the political re-ordering of society, but these will never fully result in the deep peace that we were designed to know. This can come only by being completely set free from the spiritual authority and power of the god of this world.

To accomplish this, Jesus paid with His life the cost necessary for our true freedom. Most people have rejected His offer, and have, instead, striven for an outer freedom through the wisdom of the world. Disciples of Jesus, however, abiding in Him, discover the amazing truth that surrender to God leads to extraordinary and lasting heart-freedom. Thank You, Lord!

Prayer: Thank You indeed, Lord, that there is real freedom in You. I choose to pursue this for the rest of my days. Amen.
