You Have My Attention
by Tanya Person
Often, during this pandemic, I have heard people say that God is trying to get our attention. Then, as I was reading the account of Moses and the burning bush, I noticed that God used the burning bush to get Moses’ attention and He spoke to him as he turned aside to look.
I know that God speaks to us through many things. He can talk to us while we are doing our normal work. But I think sometimes we forget to listen, so God uses something to get our attention; something to make us pause.
In the previous verse to today’s verse, it says, ‘“This is amazing,” Moses said to himself. “Why isn’t that bush burning up? I must go see it”’ (Exodus 3:3). It caused him to pause in what he was doing, and then God spoke when he saw Moses coming for a closer look.
During this pandemic, many things have been paused. I know things look different in different households. Parents with school-age children may find themselves with a new kind of busyness as they suddenly have to teach their children and keep them entertained. Some people are having to work from home. Some people are using this time to catch up on things that they haven’t had time to do before. I feel that as this continues for longer, people are getting busy again in what has become the new normal for their household. We may be losing the time to stop and hear what God is wanting to say to us.
I want to encourage us all today to notice the things in our lives that God is using to get our attention. Take a moment to turn aside and check it out and listen for what God is saying to you. Don’t allow yourself to get so busy that you don’t notice the ‘burning bush’ that God has put in your path. You can use the following prayer as a start, but don’t just say, “Amen” and end the prayer. Spend some time listening for what the Lord wants to say to you.
Prayer: Lord, thank You that You are a God of relationship and that You want to talk to me. Forgive me for the times I have allowed myself to get busy and not listen to You. I ask that today You would get my attention and speak to me through whatever You choose. I choose to pause and see what You are saying.
