Who Is Your Rock?

by Annalene Holtzhausen

The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my saviour; my God is my rock, in whom I find protection. He is my shield, the power that saves me, and my place of safety.

Psalm 18:2, NLT

There are many verses in the Bible that speak of the Lord being our rock and our safe place; the One we run to when we are struggling. There is a lovely song by Paul Baloche, called ‘God My Rock’ and the lyrics of the chorus are as follows: ‘You are the strength of my heart, I can rely on You. I can rely on You. You are the joy of my life. You are my song in the night.  There is no one as true. Jesus, I trust in You.’

This may be a really encouraging thought for some people, but maybe for someone else reading this, it isn’t a reality. The things that happened to you, and the circumstances you were exposed to, may have been so hurtful and traumatic that you have never thought of the Lord as your rock.

This truth from the Bible (and many other truths) may seem like a distant thought, meant for other people only. In your life, you have always felt that you have had to do it all on your own, as there is no one else who cares for you. You believe there is no one you can rely on.

We read in John 10:10a (NLT) that ‘The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy.’ The enemy’s only goal is to bring destruction into our lives, and he tries to do so in many different ways. People experience traumatic things which cause deep pain and hurt. How can we overcome these traumas and experience the Lord’s promise in John 10:10b: ‘My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life?’ How does this become a reality for each one of us?

Only the Lord can bring the healing and restore what the enemy has stolen. He is the only One who can speak His truth into your spirit and make it a reality for you.

I would like to encourage you to just turn your ear to Him, even if you feel that you can’t trust Him. Just begin by speaking to Him and telling Him where you’re at. Allow Him to gently bring His truth where the enemy has thrown lies at you.

He wants to restore your trust in Him and be your rock and safe place. Ask the Lord to also bring the right people alongside you on this healing journey. You can take it one small step at a time.
