Who Am I?

For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves.
Colossians 1:13, NIV

God said to Moses, “I am who I am” (Exodus 3:14). No explanation is necessary. God is God, almighty, majestic, the beginning and end. He is immortal and eternal, greater than all things.

But who am I? God knows, but do I know? Sometimes people underrate themselves. I’ve heard it said, “I’m just a weary pilgrim.” This may be someone’s view, but it’s a million miles from the truth. ‘God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God’ (2 Corinthians 5:21). We were chosen by God to be a special people. ‘For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight’ (Ephesians 1:4). And there’s more. ‘You were marked with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are Gods possession (Ephesians 1:13-14). What more do we want? What more do we need? But is this how we see ourselves?

Looking at our reflection in a mirror we may see a perception of who we are through critical eyes. But we need to ask Jesus to help us to stop looking at our imperfections and see our potential instead, Because we are being moulded into the image of God, day by day (2 Corinthians 3:18).

The trouble is that we only see in part, and we may have been contaminated by the world because we are surrounded by all kinds of ungodly influences. But Jesus said, If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32-33).

We must take positive action to live fully in what we believe, and yet, if we try in our own strength we will fail. “But greater is He that is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). We must know where our strength is and put our trust fully in Him. ‘Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit’ (Galatians 5:25). We need to be constantly aware of God, who is in us, and the Holy Spirit, who is our guide. As we walk with Him daily, we will discover His leading, His strength and His protection.

So, who am I? ‘The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ’ (Romans 8:16-17). Then we can say with the Apostle Paul: “I no longer live but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians 2:20).
