Walking in Darkness

Given the choice between walking down a lit path at night or one that was pitch black, most people would choose the one with lights. It’s not rocket science - it just makes good sense. Being able to see where you are going avoids you falling into a ditch or tripping over an obstacle in the path. It gives you some sense of knowing what’s coming and what potential dangers might lay ahead. The above verse relates to walking in darkness also - not down a physical path - but down the path of life.

God longs for us to have a more intimate relationship with Him where we do literally rely on Him and not our own ability. But the reality is that while everything is well lit in our lives, we can easily get too comfortable and just rely on the things we can see. Verse 11 of Isaiah 50 warns us against trying to light our own path – something that we all naturally look to do. It is clear that if we live by our own light our reward will be that we will lie down in great torment. It is saying that if we choose not to rely on God during the dark times, we will not know peace. Our peace will be dependent on our own ability to light the path ahead and navigate our way through the dark times of life. God is encouraging us to simply accept the path He has us on and to rely on Him. That way we will experience His peace and will come to know, in a very real and tangible way, that He is the Light of life and One that can be trusted in all situations.

Prayer: Lord, please help us to keep our eyes fixed on You, to stay close to You at all times and to learn what it means to totally rely on You – even in the dark times of our lives. In Jesus name, Amen.
