Waiting on the Lord
by Jim Person
Growing up, my dad would get us five kids up and out to our fishing site by 04:30, and us kids would be less than exuberant every time he pushed us out of the warm confines of our beds. I remember waiting in our skiff in the dark cold morning hours and not thinking good thoughts about my dad, and my impatience was probably on a high level.
What is the number one thing that is revealed in us when we must wait? In my experience, it is impatience!
When we look at the context of Psalm 62, from verse 1 to the end of the psalm, David reflects on aspects of God. He knew through experience that his victory came from the Lord. He knew that, without God, he had no foundation on which to stand. God was his rock.
He had endured slander, having his position over-thrown, and people telling lies about him, but David knew God would defend him. He put his hope in God, not in what he saw around him.
And in his waiting on the Lord, he discovered the fragility of the heart. In the Psalm he addresses pride, trust, thoughts of others, then honesty, our words, our position, and finally ends with looking into the heart. Why steal? Why think you’ve done everything with your own power? It’s God’s unfailing love that enables us to accomplish what we do, and God repays all according to what they have done.
Waiting on the Lord is critical. It reveals our inner self, our motives, and it reveals what is in our heart. It requires us to trust the Lord in His timing and not rely on our own understanding of the situation. It requires a humble heart to wait for Him.
