Waiting on the Lord

Today we live in such an instant world, where almost everything is within reach, we can go online and purchase almost anything we need, and have it delivered within days. People these days don’t like to wait at all, and think the quicker things are, the better. But one of the most important things I’ve had to learn, in my walk with the Lord, is to have patience, and to wait on Him.
Abram was seventy-five years old when the Lord first told him that, through his descendants, all the families of the earth would be blessed, ‘I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse those who curse you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed’ (Genesis 12:3).
About ten years later, when still no son had arrived, Sarah persuaded Abram to go with her servant girl Hagar and have a child with her. What started off in the Spirit, through the Lord’s initial promise to Abram, now moved into the flesh, and what resulted from that is one of the major root problems of the turmoil in the Middle East today, jealously between two brothers, Ishmael and Isaac.
Thirteen years later, the Lord made a covenant with Abram, and again promised him that he would be the father of many nations, ‘When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, I am Almighty God, walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly. Then Abram fell on his face, and God talked to him, saying. As for Me, my covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations’ (Genesis 17:1-4).
Then, in Genesis 18:13, we read, ‘And the LORD said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son.” The important words were, ‘at the appointed time’, so, a year later, twenty-five years from the first promise to Abraham, Isaac was born, at the set time that the Lord had determined.
When the Lord gives us a word or a promise for something in our lives, we must have patience and wait for Him to bring it about in His timing. If it’s from the Lord, He will bring to pass. We must be careful not to move into the flesh and try to make it happen. It could be very costly.
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank You that Your plans and purposes for my life are in Your hands. Help me to learn to wait on You, knowing that Your timing is perfect. Amen.
