Unfailing Forgiveness

by Lindsey Hanekom

And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness’.
Exodus 34:6, NIV

A while ago, while much of Britain was lying under a blanket of snow, I was reminded of the scripture, ‘…wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow’ (Psalm 51:7). As we entered into my favourite season of spring I started to put the thought of winter behind me as I looked forward to warmer, lighter days. And then it snowed! Just as I started to think that there’s no more possibility of snow, it came yet again.

And so it is with forgiveness. We struggle with sin. Sometimes it’s the same sin that we just can’t seem to stay away from. We sin, repent, accept forgiveness and then, just as we think we’re over it, we fall into the same sin again. Although we can become angry and frustrated at ourselves, let’s remember that God’s forgiveness is never-ending. We can get to the place where we think there’s no more forgiveness available to us. We just can’t forgive ourselves for our ongoing sin issues. Yet, we must let go of judgement upon ourselves. We must work with God to receive His forgiveness and also ask for His help in winning the battle against our sin issues.

It’s only when we conquer these sinful patterns that the fullness of spring-time, a time of new life and new hope can be birthed.

Prayer: Father God, thank You that Your love and forgiveness are unfailing. I recognise there are sin issues in my life that I’m struggling to overcome. I continue to repent of these sins. I accept Your forgiveness and release myself from the judgement of them. Please help me to discover the root of these issues so that together we can win these battles in my life. Amen.
