Trust, Hope, and Confidence

But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
Jeremiah 17:7-8, NLT

Where is our trust? In these days, when it seems politics in the world are being shaken, many people in the world are full of fear, and speculating about what will happen. They are full of doom and gloom. They are depressed and hopeless.

Even if we are happy about the results of a recent election or vote, we need to remember that this is not where our confidence and hope for the future should be coming from. People who’ve been elected frequently don’t keep their campaign promises, whether it’s because they don’t really have the power to make the change, or because others sway them, after being elected, or whether they just lied to get the vote.

But, for those who put their trust in God, governments can come and go, and we can be like the tree in our scripture today, not bothered by the heat or drought (or floods or winds, for that matter), because our roots go deep. Our leaves can stay green no matter what comes, and we can keep producing fruit. This fruit is a testimony to the faithfulness of God. This fruit provides what the world around us needs.

So how are you today? Are you feeling dry and uncertain about the future, or are you full of life and producing fruit? Let’s repent if we’ve put our hope and trust in anything or anyone other than God, and wherever we’re at. Let’s commit again to letting our roots grow deeper in Him, so we can bring God’s hope to the hurting world around us.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for looking to governments or people for security. I see that my trust must remain completely in You alone. Show me how to deepen my trust in You. Help me to grow deeper in You, day by day, so I can produce fruit for Your glory! Amen.
