The Enemy Speaks Our Language.

The people of God in Jerusalem were under siege and in danger of dying at the hands of the enemy, the king of Assyria. The leaders of Judah wanted the enemy to speak Aramaic, a foreign language that only the leaders understood and not Judean, the language that the rest of the people would hear and understand and be tempted to disobey their king Hezekiah.
The promise made by the enemy, Assyria, was that if the people would surrender and bargain with them and not obey their leader Hezekiah, who trusted the Lord, there would be no more suffering, and in fact they would have food and water and be taken away to a land like their own and filled with nice things. But it wouldn’t be their own land promised to them by God, and they would no longer be under the rule and reign of God, but rather would be under the rule and influence of the enemy.
The enemy not only speaks our own language today, but what he says is appealing, and will indeed bring temporary relief to our situation, if only we will turn against the covering of our leaders and abandon what God says. My experience has taught me that sin can bring temporary comfort or relief from my current pain and suffering in the way of fun or distraction. But then I’m left with the emptiness and new pain of the consequences of the sins I just bargained for, plus I’ll still have the original problems I started with. The cycle continues. Slavery is what we would truly be bargaining for.
Bottom line: Will we believe the enemy of our souls, or will we believe God?
God can be trusted to deliver us from the torment and pain caused by the enemy. God will also give us abundant life, in contrast to what the enemy has in mind for us. God’s Word is true. He will rescue us from the slavery and death designed for us by the enemy. We need to trust that God doesn’t lie to us (Numbers 23:19), and we must choose not to bargain with the enemy, who does lie. ‘As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord Jesus’.
Prayer: Father help me to remain firmly planted in Your house and make my roots to grow even deeper, so that when the lies of the enemy come they will be heard for what they truly are, slavery and ultimately death.Amen.
