The Beginning and the End
by David Cross
During the middle part of the last century, every avenue of theoretical physics and astronomical observation was consistently pointing to an expanding universe with a precise beginning, an origin for all matter and energy. Much of the scientific world, even including Albert Einstein, had a strong objection to this emerging truth, because it led to the difficult question of how and why it began. It had been much easier to assume that the universe had just always existed.
What was even worse for the atheistic members of the scientific community was the strong possibility, from this new understanding about the origin of the universe, that it might need to have been brought into being by an infinitely intelligent Mind.
Of course, Bible-believing Christians were perfectly comfortable with the discovery of a so-called big-bang start to the universe. It was just as the Bible stated, the result of creative words spoken by the eternally existing God, of whom Jesus, the Alpha, was an active part (Colossians 1:16).
Scientists are still wrestling with theories as to how the universe might end, whether by catastrophic explosion or implosion, and when that end might happen. Although the Bible does not answer these precise questions, it does tell the followers of Jesus, stated in His own words, that He will be with us to the very end of the age (Matthew 28:20).
Jesus also makes it clear that He is preparing an eternal home for us and that, in the end days, He will come back to this earth to collect His family, both the living and the dead, so that we can be close with Him for ever (John 14:3). In the same way that everything came into being through Him at the beginning of the universe, so He will be there at the very end of time, as the Omega.
Prayer: Father God, thank You for the certainty that nothing has happened or will happen in this universe that is beyond Your control, and that I am eternally safe with You no matter what physical turmoil must be faced in the coming end days. Amen.
