Thank God for the Law of Gravity

by David Cross

Obey the Lord your God and all these blessings will be yours.
Deuteronomy 28:2, GNT

All of God’s laws that undergird His creation, both physical and spiritual, were set in place for our benefit. But that benefit depends on whether we follow the simple rules associated with His laws.

The physical law of gravity is very good for us, unless we ignore a warning notice at a cliff edge, placed there by the relevant authority. That same law, which thankfully keeps all our feet on the ground, then becomes likely to do us significant harm, if not causing our death.

The warning notice is unlikely to be worded in an equivocal way. It most likely will say something like, “Danger, cliff edge, go no further!” We of course have a choice as to whether we take heed of the instruction or not, but I have yet to find anyone who feels upset by the abrupt tone of the warning.

God’s commandments throughout the Bible are exactly equivalent to that warning notice at the top of the cliff. In direct and clear words, God tells us how to stay right with the spiritual laws of His universe, such as His law of sowing and reaping. ‘Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows’ (Galatians 6:7).

It’s astonishing that the same person who is willing to obey the command at the top of the cliff in regard to their physical wellbeing, is unwilling to obey the commands of the Creator of that cliff in regard to their spiritual well-being, even though God established the laws of both domains. In fact, the world seems to be increasingly offended by the boundaries that God has apparently placed on people’s lives. How foolish!

Prayer: Father God, thank You for every precious law that You have set in place for the benefit of mankind. Remind us again that to obey Your commandments is not a bondage in our lives, but a pathway to true freedom. Thank You that Your Word says: ‘Sow righteousness for yourselves, reap the fruit of unfailing love’ (Hosea 10:12). Amen.
