Temples of the Holy Spirit
by Vicky Munro
I recently had a health scare, and ended up in my local casualty department for a number of hours until the doctors were able to find out what was causing my symptoms. Whilst I was there, it was shown that my blood pressure was very high, which was a concern, as well as some of the symptoms I was showing. I was stabilised and later released home.
However, I was still extremely anxious and was not feeling so good. A few friends came round to pray for me that evening, and, as the night went on, the anxiety lifted and my symptoms reduced. At my morning check-up, I was found to be doing much better.
After my friends had left, I asked God to show me any areas that I needed to look at in my own life. I was not really surprised when He showed me things about how I’d been living recently. My diet had really taken a nose dive! Looking back at just how much rubbish, junk food, and sweet things I had been eating in the last five months, it’s no wonder my body was struggling.
I felt the Lord gently say to me that my body is His temple, but I’d not been looking after it very well. I knew that I needed there and then to make some changes, so, I set about doing it immediately.
God our Father really wants the best for us in body, soul, and spirit. Yes, He will and does help us, but we have to do our bit too. It really was a wake-up call for me. I understand we can still get sick, or pick up bugs, but we do need to do what we can to take care of ourselves. Father God will meet our needs and help us, if we ask Him.
Although I’m sharing about a physical issue I had, I know our soul and spirit need looking after too. So, I asked God whether I had slipped in this area of my life as well. I then realised I hadn’t been giving myself good, peaceful times to rest. Instead, I had been filling those times with unhealthy things, and then just expecting everything to be alright.
God really spoke to me about how important it is to get a good balance. We are to rest, feed our bodies, spend time with Him, and really allow Him into those areas that we struggle with.
I’d like to encourage you today to ask God to show you if there are any areas that you are struggling in. Talk to Him. Maybe ask a trusted friend to help you. I find this helpful with my diet. We swap food ideas and encourage one another.
Let’s start by giving thanks today for all that God has done, and for our bodies.
