Surely You’re Not Referring to Me, God!
by Sue Dare
The other day I sat down with an open Bible before me and asked God to speak to me. I was reading through the book of Deuteronomy at the time, and I was learning all about Israel’s history – where they had come from, where they were at that present time and what God had planned for them in the future.
Moses was addressing his fellow Israelites in the desert, east of the Jordan, as they were yet to inherit the Promised Land. In today’s scripture, Moses was reminding them they were God’s chosen people and His treasured possession. God had set His affection on them and was about to confirm His Covenant (Deuteronomy 7:7-9).
How fortunate they were to have the great ‘I AM’ as their God! It wasn’t because of their own righteousness that God would drive out the nations before them and cause them to inherit Canaan, but because of the wickedness of the peoples there, and God’s promise to the patriarchs – Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Their God was a Covenant-keeping God and He’d determined to give them the land.
I knew all this. It was revision to me. But then I felt God speak gently to my heart. “Sue, you also are my treasured possession, my chosen one and I have set my affections on you!”
Those words stopped me in my tracks. “Surely not”, I reasoned. After all, if you read these scriptures in context, God is talking about Israel and not about me. I didn’t want to be guilty of taking Scripture out of context. But what if that really was the voice of God speaking to me. I had asked Him to speak to me!
Could God actually be trying to encourage me, His child? I think perhaps the answer to that is yes. We all need to be affirmed by our heavenly Father from time to time, and to be reminded just how precious we are to Him. Yes God loved and chose Israel, but He also loves and chose you and me. We ARE His treasured possession, and He HAS set His affections on each of us. We matter to God.
I don’t know what your circumstances are right now, but can I encourage you to allow those words to minister deep into your spirit. You ARE loved. You ARE treasured. You ARE chosen. God HAS set his affections on you. As difficult as that may be for some of you to receive, it’s still the truth, nevertheless. Allow God to ‘love on you’ today. You’re His servant, but you’re also His beloved child.
Prayer: Father God, sometimes I struggle to receive Your love. Help me to embrace truth and allow You to show me just how much You love me. Amen.
