The whole course is exceptional very relevant to me. I have gone away with a lot to think about. I have learnt that I don't have just to cope and be so independent. God is good & loves me, even me!.... Read More...

Remember What God Has Done

by Steve Bland

“I only have the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you killed in the valley of Elah,” the priest replied. “It is wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. Take that if you want it, for there is nothing else here.” “There is nothing like it!” David replied. “Give it to me!”
1 Samuel 21:9, NLT

Once, as an exercise at church, we were asked to write down, in the following week, as many times as we could remember when God had spoken into our lives.

As I sat one day, contemplating, and trying to think of at least one time God had spoken into my life, I began to actually think, “Has God ever spoken into my life?” Then He started to remind me of various scriptures that were special to me, of situations I had found myself in where He had revealed some truth to me, a song or a word someone had given me. As I started to write these memories down, it became apparent that this was becoming a special time in my life of Him showing His love and care shown to me over the years. It was a special time of ‘God’ memories.

Over the years, God has spoken into my life on many occasions, either through a thought, a scripture, a song, nature, a picture, or even using an object or a situation I was in that had nothing to do with the perceived things of God. The list is endless. I can remember as a young Christian listening to the radio and God speaking to me through a song by Madonna. Imagine that! It was ‘True Blue’, if you’re wondering. The line was, ‘Your heart fits me like a glove.’ God was showing me the closeness of His love wrapped around me like a hand in a glove.

In my life, God has sometimes used a ‘repeat’, for example, something in nature, to remind me of His love. So, when that happens, I hear or see the thing that God used before to speak to me. It takes me back to that time where He spoke to me, and it reminds me of His goodness.

You may be reading this and thinking, “Okay. But what has all this got to do with today’s verse.” Well, there are plenty of scriptures from the Bible I could have used to talk about remembering the things of God, but this verse caught my imagination.

David, the one who was anointed as king, had just fled in fear of his life from Saul, leaving everything behind. He came to see Ahimelech the priest, told him some story and asked if the priest had any weapons just casually lying around. The priest went and brought Goliath’s sword to David. I can imagine, as David picked up the sword, he would have remembered that great victorious day when the Lord of Heaven’s armies had used him, the young shepherd boy, to bring about great victory. I’m sure God would have been encouraging him, giving him hope for what lay ahead. David must have thought, “If You were with me then, then You will be with me now.” (You can read the story of David fleeing from Saul in 1 Samuel Chapter 17 through to 1 Samuel Chapter 31).

So, I want to encourage you to spend some time with the Lord and ask Him to remind you of the times when He has spoken into your life. You never know. He may surprise you.
