Our Guide

by Gemma Gardner

The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.
Psalm 37:23, NLT

Have you ever experienced getting lost, and having no idea where you are? I guess it happens to most people at one time or another. Maybe when they were children. It can be very frightening. It happened to me recently. I had four days away to visit friends in a town where I used to live, before I got married. On one of the days, I was going to visit a friend in her home. I hoped I would remember the way. It is nineteen years since I got married and moved away.

I walked through the beautiful park I love, crossed a road, and walked through a little alley on to another road. I thought I then needed to turn left, but as I kept walking and not reaching the side road I wanted, I knew something must be wrong.

It was a hot day, and there was nobody around to ask. So, I turned around and started to walk back to the little alley I had come through. “Lord, please help me. Please send someone to direct me”, I prayed. I was feeling anxious. A few minutes passed, and then I saw a man and woman pushing a pram and coming towards me. I told them I was lost and asked directions to the side road I wanted. The man pulled out his mobile phone and looked up where we were. He saw the road I needed and told me I just had to keep walking and it was first on the right. I was very grateful to him and to the Lord. What a relief it was when I found my friend’s home! Needless to say, I told her all about it!

The above verse is reassuring, to know that the Lord will guide us and direct our steps, not only in our ordinary everyday lives, but also in the big decisions we have to make from time to time. The Lord really does delight in every detail of our lives, and He wants us to come to Him, our loving Heavenly Father, who watches over us and cares for us every moment, when we are awake or asleep.

But the one condition of being guided by Him is that we are godly. That means, acknowledging Him in all our ways. Then He will direct our paths, ‘Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take’ (Proverbs 3:6).
