Mustard Seed Faith is Enough

by Denise Cross

“It was because you do not have enough faith, answered Jesus. I assure you that if you have faith as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this hill, Go from here to there! and it will go. You could do anything!”
Matthew 17:20, GNB

I have to admit I have always felt a bit condemned by this verse. After all a mustard seed is very small, so it seemed to me that Jesus was saying that the disciples, and that would obviously include you and me, were unable to muster even the most miniscule amount of faith? I concluded that since not many mountains seem to have moved recently we would surely all get ‘D’ on our record cards for ‘Faith’.

Then whilst sprinkling cress seeds on to damp soil one day it hit me. It isn’t the size of the seed that is important, as long as there is a seed. No seed obviously means no action and no consequence. No faith clearly results in no miracles. However, even a miniscule seed will be enough for some fairly major action, in fact something that seems quite miraculous. But there is another requirement and that is that the right external conditions are in place. The seed just achieves the miracle of growth without striving and, what is more, the seed has no responsibility for those external conditions. The gardener has that in his control.

So our small seed of faith is enough to cause enormous miracles when we put our small seed into the hands of the Heavenly Gardener, and He puts that little seed into the right atmosphere for the full potential to be released. As long as we have some faith - however small - God can use it. If we trust in Him and His mountain-moving power then even our small seed of faith can be enough to achieve His great miracles.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your great love and faithfulness. Thank You that we don’t have to strive to produce miracles. We just have to learn to trust You and let You plant us into the right circumstances in which our small seed of faith will be sufficient for You to work miracles. How exciting that is! Use the little seed we offer for Your purposes, dear Lord, in Jesus’ mighty name we pray. Amen.
