Inner Wounds that Lead to Sinful Choices

by David Cross

He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives.
Isaiah 61:1b, ESV

Inner brokenness is not a sin. It is a heart-wound, the result of deep injury suffered in this fallen world. It can take many forms not least in damage to our God-created identity but, thankfully, Jesus came, in accordance with the prophecy of Isaiah, to make true heart-repair in our lives entirely possible.

In the world today, and sadly even in the Church, there is a growing opinion that we should simply affirm many forms of inner brokenness in a person, including in the area of identity disorder, declaring that the expression of any chosen identity is a valid life-choice. To suggest that such choices are likely to be harmful is frequently now regarded as discrimination and hatred towards the person involved.

Jesus is able to bring healing to deeply damaged lives, and He knows the painful identity issues that many have struggled with all their lives. However, if we choose to believe that many forms of inner brokenness are simply a part of God’s created order for human life, and therefore to believe that a person has a right to walk in a life-style contrary to God’s plumb line of righteousness, we have stepped beyond the realm of just dealing with inner wounding into the need to deal with sin.

God is ready and willing to heal the broken-hearted and to forgive our sinful behaviour, but He cannot do that if we have made a choice, in agreement with the world, that our wrongful lifestyle is justified by a disordered heart. He loves us too much to condone that way of thinking, which will never bring the peace that we long for.
