I Will Deliver Him

‘Because he loves me,’ says the LORD, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.
Psalm 91:14-16, NIV

Fear is something that happens in our lives, but sometimes we can’t understand the reason. For example, I didn’t like visiting hospitals. Perhaps this came upon me as a young boy, when my mother, who was only thirty-five- years old, was discharged from hospital and then, a week later, passed away. I was about eight years-old at the time. I wasn’t conscious of this fear until I was in my fifties. I’d given all kinds of excuses not to go whenever I was asked to visit people in hospitals. It could be one of the reasons why I never liked going to a doctor when I was unwell.

The deliverance from this condition came in a strange way. One lunch hour, I was heading to a Full Gospel Christian Fellowship Meeting. As I was walking towards the place of the fellowship meeting, I heard a voice asking, “Where are you going?” I answered under my breath, “I’m going to this meeting”. Then, I heard the same voice telling me, “Look around you”. I looked around. I saw a hospital right in front of me. On the left side was another clinic-type hospital and another smaller hospital on the far left.

I stopped in my tracks and cried, “Oh God, forgive me”. I turned around and walked back on my tracks. I stopped by a fruit stall and bought a kilogram of lychees and started walking towards the General Hospital which was located two streets away. I came to the Urology Ward. As I didn’t know anybody, I went around, bed-by-bed, distributing the fruit to the patients in the ward. I distributed the last two to a young man who had just had both of his legs amputated. I sat with him for a few minutes, prayed and ask God to touch this young man and speed up his healing process.

I left the hospital, returned to the office and went back to work. I didn’t have lunch, but I wasn’t hungry. The afternoon went by, and, when work was over, I left and returned home. I didn’t know what had happened. Months later, I was asked to visit a man in hospital. Without hesitating, and no longer conscious of my past fear, I went to the hospital, spent time with him and prayed for him before I left. This went on a number of times.

The fear and dislike seemed to disappear. Praise God! The above psalm, though not directly related to my problem, was very significant to me. God will rescue and protect us because we acknowledge His name. So, if you’re faced with something similar to my experience, look to God. He’ll deliver you.

Prayer: Father, You’re light, and, where there’s light, darkness will disappear. So, Lord, I ask that You let Your light shine into every dark area in my life. Let Your healing and deliverance take place. Rule over my life, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
