Have a fling!

When I moved near to the seaside here at Glyndley Manor I thought I would try my hand at sea fishing, having fished in rivers for many years. I went along during the mackerel season and came home laden with fish for the team to consume. But I realised that in order to do it better I needed help with casting my line out, as it was going too short a distance and going the wrong way! I went to a friend and he gave me some ‘casting lessons’.

I had to learn a structured, practiced, controlled movement. But the word used for ‘cast’ in 1 Peter 5:7 is very different from that. It’s a spontaneous fling. ‘Cast all your anxiety on Him’. The Greek word indicates a sudden throwing action, as if you can’t wait to get rid of something and in a moment of desperation you just fling it away. (In the same way that you would if you picked up an activated hand grenade!)

Why would God want us to do that with our anxieties? Well, because He knows how to deal with them and he also knows how much of a potential danger they can be to us. Rather than hold on to our anxieties He calls us to fling them in His direction so that He can pour His healing into our lives and bring the freedom we so need. We may need help letting go of course, but that is where prayer ministry helps.

So next time you feel weighed down with worries and anxiety, try having a fling at God. Leave the anxiety with Him, and then you will be better able to receive healing from Jesus.

Prayer: Thank you Lord that you are both willing and able to handle all the situations that prevail in my life. Help me to give you all my anxieties and not hang on to them any longer. In Jesus' name, Amen.
