God’s Plan for Nations

by David Cross

From one man He created all the nations throughout the whole earth. He decided beforehand when they should rise and fall, and He determined their boundaries.
Acts 17:26, NLT

In these challenging days of politicians seeking to determine the form of a future relationship between the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe, perhaps it is helpful to reflect for a moment on God’s view of nations.

Our verse today reminds us that His plan for human beings has always included, at appointed times in history, the formation of nations, each with distinct boundaries of land and nationhood. Sadly, God’s plans and purposes, whilst not destroyed, are always being disrupted by the sinfulness of humankind.

The restoration of the God-given purpose and identity of nations, so damaged by our sin, is clearly part of the redeeming work of Jesus on the Cross. In Psalm 2:8, we are given an amazing opportunity to witness our Heavenly Father speaking to His Son:
‘Ask of Me, and I will surely give the nations as Your inheritance, And the very ends of the earth as Your possession’.

Today, Jesus is not only redeeming individual lives but is also restoring divine ownership and order for the nations of the world. As the Body of Christ on earth, we have the opportunity to participate in this restoration of God’s order, through our individual and corporate intercession.

Prayer: Father, as You restore all things back into Your divine order, I pray that the leaders of nations would have personal revelation of Your plans and purposes, and that they might seek You for establishing rightful interaction between nations and for the true healing of every national identity. Amen.
