God’s Mighty Power

The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork.
Psalm 19:1, NKJV

When in history have we seen such displays of man’s power influencing our lives? Media, modes of transportation, electronics for making our lives easier, just to mention a few.

I witnessed a fireworks display recently that was an amazing presentation of light and sound. It was a brilliant, glistening, colourful show of flashing lights and a cacophony of sound. There was a jolt in my soul from deep inside as each BOOM and bright light shot across the sky. At one point, there were huge flames bursting out about a half mile from where I was standing. I could feel the heat even at that distance. Some of the dazzling bursts of light lingered over the small lake leaving an incandescent sky.

As I watched, amazed at man’s ability to invent such a display of what felt like power, I could only think of how this paled in comparison to the power of our God. When He creates He does so to produce some kind of life, or blessing, or fruit for those He loves and delights over. When we experience His power in our lives it makes an impression on our souls, often bringing great peace into our lives, and not that ‘soul shaking’ that tends to jar us and make us quiver, (although He certainly is able to make us quiver.)

We’re left stunned when faced with the wonder of God’s raw power. Can you imagine what it would have been like to have witnessed the marvel of His original creation of water, earth, sky, animals and man? One reason God deserves our reverence and humble adoration is because of the sheer strength of His being.

However, as so often is the situation, we know the balance of His paradoxes: power but gentleness; king but shepherd; mighty but lowly; warrior but peacemaker; strong but humble. These paradoxes are just another example of the dynamism that enables Him to meet us where we are in need.

Prayer: Father God, I stand silenced and overwhelmed by the thought of Your power. I thank You that You have breathed Your life into me. And I thank You for those moments when I can glimpse Your creative power, in Jesus’ name, Amen.
