Flying Lessons
by Rosalinde Joosten
There are times in our lives when we wish we could fly like a bird and feel the air current under our wings. Sadly God did not design or bodies to fly in the physical. The Bible does speak however of us soaring on wings like eagles as we wait on the Lord, and there is a place in our lives to soar with God.
Eagles need to learn to use their wings in order for them to fly, soar and survive. They are not able to just fly from one moment to the next. Young eagles watch their parents take off, fly and land and learn to fly themselves by stretching their wings and flapping them.
They spread their wings and learn to keep their balance. They begin to flap their wings with determination, as they see their parents do, and this is essential for them to strengthen the muscles in their wings, without which they are unable to fly. Before they are able to mount up, they have to both wait until they have grown sufficiently, and have sufficiently exercised and strengthened their wing muscles in preparation for take off. All this happens within the safety of the nest. Then, as they gain strength, they lift of briefly to take off and land into the nest and then onto the branches supporting it, until the moment comes where they take off into full flight, doing what they were made to do.
God knows that learning to soar like eagles requires time to grow and time to practice in the safety of the nest, before we can take off to fulfil our destiny in Him.
Sometimes we grow impatient as we have to wait, but this waiting includes a growing, a strengthening and maturing, without any of which we cannot soar. We are expected to play our part as we wait on Him, we need to choose to strengthen our muscles, prepare for full flight with small deliberate steps, so that when the time comes for us to take off, we have waited, have grown and are ready to do what He has prepared for us to do.
Prayer: Dear heavenly Father, please forgive me when I have not wanted to wait on You, or chosen to strengthen my muscles. Please would You show me how I can step out in small ways today into that which You have created me for so that when the time comes to soar like the eagle, I will be ready. Amen.
