Feeling a Bit Wobbly
by Richard Griffiths
Sometimes we encounter what Sue and I call ‘a wobbly place’. By this we mean a time or situation when we feel a bit insecure, uncertain or worried. It might be a relationship that’s become difficult, a financial challenge or illness. There are any number of things that make us feel a bit insecure, a bit wobbly.
Our golden retriever, Bess, had a wobbly moment a little while ago. We wanted to cross a little suspension footbridge over some fast-flowing rapids. It was a good, firm bridge, a little narrow, but with good railings. But, as soon as she had set foot on it, Bess applied her brakes as only a golden retriever can.
No way was she going to walk over that bridge! And I could see why. The footway was made of wooden slats with gaps between. From just twelve inches above the gaps, Bess could see the river thundering beneath all too clearly. She was scared, scared enough not to risk crossing the bridge, even though the gaps were no more than a couple of inches wide. Her problem was that she was focussing on the wrong thing.
When we go through a ‘wobbly’ time, we need to keep focussed on the right thing. It’s so easy, isn’t it? for our minds to be so full of the thing that troubles us that we lose touch with the firm ground of God and His promises.
Over and over again, especially when he faced challenging times, David, in the Psalms, declares that God is his rock:
‘The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold’ (Psalm 18:2).
‘He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand’ (Psalm 40:2).
‘Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give the command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress’ (Psalm 71:3).
‘Come, let us sing for joy to the Lord; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation’ (Psalm 95:1).
Is there something that makes you feel a bit wobbly today? How about taking a leaf out of David’s book and declare to yourself, to the enemy and to God that He is your Rock, your firm foundation. And fix your focus, not like Bess on the gaps, but on God and His promises.
Prayer: Father, I praise You, my Rock and the stronghold of my life. I’m sorry for the times when I lose sight of You and begin to focus on my problems. Today I choose to look to You and declare that in You I am secure. Amen.
